In Delta State, there are eight universities, two of which are federally owned, four of which are state-owned, and seven of which are privately held.
List of Universities in Delta State
Federal Universities:
1. Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE)
This University was approved and founded on the 14th of March 2007 during the ongoing Federal Executive Council meeting but kickstarted its admission process in 2008.
Under a Federal Government of Nigeria effort, the university was set up with the objective of constructing a specialized institution in the Niger Delta that would develop middle- and upper-level professionals with knowledge of the oil and gas industry.
Prior to moving to its permanent location on the construction of its main campus at Ugbomro, Uvwie Local Government Area Delta State, in 2010, the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, and Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun were permitted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to share facilities.
The first in Africa and sixth worldwide, FUPRE, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, is located in Effurun, Nigeria.
2. Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta State.
This University is situated in the heart of Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu Kingdom Delta state as a higher institution owned and funded by the government.
Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko (NMU) is well-known and approved by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria, and a Coeducational Nigerian higher education is offered.
In numerous fields of study, Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko (NMU) offers courses and programs leading to bachelor degrees that are officially recognized higher education degrees. Emperor D.O. Alagoa served as the university’s first Chief Cadet Captain and Cadet Adjutant.
State Universities
1. Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka-
Delta State University, Abraka, also recognized as DELSU, is a state-owned university in Nigeria with its main campus in Abraka, Delta State, and a satellite campus in Oleh.
1995 Amended Edict led to the founding of the Oleh campus. The institution has two campuses that are roughly 200 miles away from one another.
The university now has over 22,000 students (in the 2019/2020 session) and provides a variety of programs, including full-time certificate, diploma, and degree programs as well as part-time evening and weekend degree programs. DELSU offers doctoral-level postgraduate coursework.
2. Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba
One of the three new universities built by the Delta State government and authorized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2021 is Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.
There are six faculties at this university, which currently provides undergraduate programs in agriculture, science, management and social sciences, environmental science, the arts, and computing. Prof. Ben Emukufia Akpoyomare Oghojafor is Dennis Osadebay University’s vice chancellor
3. Delta University of Science and Technology, Ozoro
Located in Ozoro, Delta State, the Delta State University of Science and Technology is a public university. The university will provide undergraduate and graduate programs in seven faculties: agriculture, science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, information technology, and management technology.
4. University of Delta, Agbor
The College of Education, Agbor, which was founded in 1980, was one of several postsecondary schools that the previous Bendel State Government constructed around the State.
The College was established to train students to become excellent teachers who will have a positive impact on the Nigerian educational system.
It is situated in the peaceful and academically welcoming city of Agbor, which serves as the administrative center of Delta State’s Ika South Local Government Area.
The college gave her pupils all the resources they needed for a relaxing study atmosphere while offering programs in a variety of academic fields.
