Covenant University Post Graduate Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements
1) Interested candidates shall complete the application form on the University portal and provide all relevant documents as specified on the application form, including the following documents;
Interested candidates should complete the application form on the University website and make available all necessary documents as enlisted on the application form. Some of these documents include the following;
1. Academic transcripts
2. Reference letters
3. Statement of purpose
4. Concept note on the proposed area of research
5. Certificates of degrees and/or diplomas
6. Nomination of potential supervisor(s) from the department of their interests.
2. Eligible candidates are expected to interact with the departmental websites through the School of Postgraduate Studies website to learn about the qualifications of any potential supervisors, including their academic and research backgrounds.
3. Nigerian-based candidates are compelled to make available their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge, exemption, or exclusion certificate.
The Dean, of the School of Postgraduate Studies, must receive authentic academic transcripts directly from each candidate and must attend the procedure upon request and assurance from the institution(s).
Note – For admission, only those applicants whose transcripts have arrived will be taken into consideration.
Specific Requirements
Masters Degree Programme
1. A prospective candidate who wishes to be enrolled into Covenant University for their Master’s degree Programme must have already held a Bachelor’s degree from Covenant University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Covenant University.
Preferably, candidates with First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), and Second Class (Lower Division with a minimum CGPA of 3.00) in the relevant disciplines may apply.
2. Two full-time academic sessions must be completed as the minimum amount of time to get a master’s degree.
PH.D. Degree Programme
1. Candidates for admission to Covenant University’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program must hold applicable Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Covenant University or from another university that has been approved by the Covenant University Senate.
Candidates with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5.00 scale or equivalent (60%) in the Master’s (M.A/M.Sc/M.Eng/M.Tech) degree result are considered eligible for a direct entry into the Ph.D. degree program at Covenant University.
2. Also, Applicants who graduated with a CGPA of 3.50–3.99 on a 5.00-point scale or equivalent (55–59%) in the Master’s degree may be considered for M.Phil/Ph.D program.
3. A Dissertation is to be written by eligible candidates who are not able to meet up with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 upon the completion of the coursework examination. After a successful defense of the Dissertation, candidates in their various areas of discipline shall be awarded an M.Phil degree.
4. Except for those who have earned M.Sc., M.A., or M.Eng. degrees in the pertinent subjects, candidates with professional Master’s degrees are not eligible for the PhD program. Three academic semesters is the minimum amount of time required for the award of a Ph.D. Degree.
Master Of Business Administration (MBA)
1. Covenant University offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree Programme with options in different courses including Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, and Entrepreneurship.
2. Candidates seeking admission to the MBA degree Programme shall possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with at least a second-class lower division from Covenant University or any other university recognized by the Senate.
3. Potential candidates who wish to be enrolled in the MBA degree Programme must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline of their choice with at least a second-class lower division from Covenant University or any other university recognized by the Senate.
Also worth noting is the fact that all postgraduate programs at Covenant University are offered full-time, except the M.Sc./ACIB Finance degree, which is offered part-time.
Postgraduate Diploma Programmes
Eligible Applicants applying for any of the PGD courses offered at Covenant University must meet the following requirements:
i. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 5 (Five) credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at ‘O’ Level in not more than two sittings.
2. Candidates must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized University or HND from any recognized Polytechnic in Nigeria not lower than Third Class; or its equivalent to be eligible to apply.
3. In addition to the above, Candidates with a Higher National Diploma (HND) with a minimum of Merit in a related field of study from a Polytechnic or any recognized institution
4. Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class (Lower Division) in an area not related to the field applying for may be considered
Academic Master Degree Programmes
Applicants applying for Academic Masters Degree courses offered at CU must meet the following requirements:
1. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 5 (five) credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at ‘O’ Level in not more than two sittings.
2. In addition to the above, Candidates must have obtained a first Degree from Covenant University(CU) or any recognized university in a relevant field with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division); and
3. Finally, Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 is also eligible.
Professional Master Degree Programmes
Applicants applying for professional Masters’s Degree courses offered at Covenant University must meet the following requirements:
1. The minimal requirement for applicants is that they have earned at least 5 (five) credits at the ‘O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, in no more than 2 sittings, separated by no more than two years.
2. Another Post Graduate admission requirement for Professional Master at Covenant University is that Candidate is expected to have obtained a First Degree from Covenant University or any recognized university in a relevant field with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)
3. In addition to the above (ii) candidates with a Third Class Degree or HND and a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) from Covenant University or any recognized institution with a minimum of 3.50 CGPA are eligible to apply.
Doctor Of Philosophy Programmes (Accounting And Business Administration Only)
Candidates applying for Ph.D. programs offered at Covenant University must meet the following prerequisites:
1. One of the basic requirements includes a minimum of 5 (five) credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at ‘O’ Level in not more than 2 sittings and not more than two years apart.
2. Candidates are expected to have obtained a First Degree from Covenant University or any of the recognized universities in Nigeria from any relevant field with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)
3. Candidate must have obtained a Masters’s Degree from Covenant University or any recognized university in the proposed field of study with a minimum CGPA of 3.50.
Important Notice
Please be aware that candidates with a B.Sc., a PGD, or an HND cannot apply directly for a Ph.D. without first completing a Master’s degree program.
Documents Required
The filled-out application forms must be attached with copies of the NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificates, as well as copies of all other required documents, including O’levels.
Candidates should make arrangements for their transcripts to be sent directly to the School of Postgraduate Studies’ Secretary. The applicant will suffer if their transcripts are not received on time.
