About the University of Mines and Technology

UMaT, located in Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana, was originally established in 1952 as the Tarkwa Technical Institute.

The institution evolved into the Tarkwa School of Mines in 1961, with the aim of training individuals for the mining industry in Ghana.

In 1976, UMaT became a part of the Kwame Nkrumah College of Science and Technology (KNUST). It was later designated a university college on October 1, 2001, and renamed Western University College at KAUST.

Finally, in November 2004, UMaT attained full university status through Law 677.
