Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU)
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), formerly known as Katsina State University, was created by the Katsina State Government in 2006, to “serve as a nucleus for the socio-economic, technological and political development of the State by constructing highly skilled human resource through conventional face-to-face and distance learning modes.”
Prior to his passing in 2010, Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who was then the Katsina State’s executive governor and afterward the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, started the process of establishing the university.
The Katsina State House of Assembly enacted the bill creating the Katsina State University on September 5, 2006, and the institution began offering courses in January 2007, with three faculties (Education, Humanities, and Natural and Applied Sciences) and 16 undergraduate programs. In order to honor Umaru Musa Yar’adua, the State House of Assembly approved a law on April 8, 2009, changing the name of the institution.
